Fighting Hegemonic Education with Liberatory Education PGU

Cross-Cultural Skills Engagement Event: January 28, 2021

During the Spring semester of my junior year, I attended a PGU about fighting hegemonic education with liberatory education. These were two terms that I was not super familiar with, but the event description was very intriguing to me. Check out the flyer below:

At this event, Jonathan Peraza spoke for an hour about curricular and pedagogical strategies to develop a liberatory educational praxis that focuses on creating an educational experience that humanizes and liberates all people through anti-racist, abolitionist, culturally responsive, and critical educational approaches. During this session, I became much more aware of how evidently our education system values white supremacy. As a white woman working to be anti-racist, I found this session to be incredibly eye-opening and engaging. Peraza was very passionate about his research and the development of liberatory education. I look forward to continuing to challenge the values and ideals our education system was built upon. The College of Education is always hosting researchers from all over the country to share their education research. I would definitely recommend attending these events to support your efforts of being anti-racist and cultivating a classroom that challenges the norms.
